The genesis of SHE, A CHINESE took place the day that Tessa Ross of Film 4, saw The Concrete Revolution, Guo Xiaolu documentary made in 2004 to his graduation from the School Movies. Aware that the director was also a writer, Tessa Ross signed a contract with her to write a film script. Xiaolu Guo developed the script at the Sundance Lab. In 2006, the Producer Natasha Dack, of Tigerlily Films, joined the project, and in 2007 began to seek financing Cinemart and IFP No Borders. With the commitment of Film 4 New Cinema Fund and the UK Film Council, with additional funding from Fonds Sud in France and the Hamburg Film Fund in Germany, Warp X decided to participate in April 2008 and funding from EM Media and Screen Yorkshire, as well as the distribution in the UK by Optimum Releasing.
The filming was done in 2008. There were two weeks of filming in London in July 2008, and two weeks in Chongqing were shot in September of that year. The gap between July and September should it was filmed in China without permission and had just decided to wait for the Olympics. The film was shot with P2 cameras to transfer images to hard drives and to get the copycat in China more easily. The assembly was held in Hamburg, home to editor Andrew Bird, and post-production in Paris in January 2009.
The film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, where he received the Golden Leopard, and has participated in the European Film Festival in Seville, as well as festivals in Toronto and Rome, among others.
