mainland China as a filmmaker, I think the world cinema should stop focusing on a specific cultural identity to go further, to achieve something bigger. My goal was to make a movie that does not follow the traditional style of Chinese cinema that crosses cultural boundaries and brings a fresh artistic language and a more personal tone. I also wanted to show the attitude of a young generation of modern China and play contemporary issues among young people in a globalized world.
Although in recent years have paid much attention to Chinese cinema worldwide, the most successful films usually tackle the issue of politics in China or display an exotic China. So much so that sometimes I have the feeling that they lack character. In this film, I wanted to give life to a character with its own voice, a woman with whom the audience can identify. Mei is an enigmatic figure. We try to follow, understand their behavior and why its decisions. But you may not get, you can even bother. It's also possible that do not understand, but we feel sympathy for her. I hope that once the film finished, let us see our world with another look.
also wanted the three male characters, Spikey, Mr. Hunt and Rachid have strong personalities from his past. A hired murderer Chinese an older man and an immigrant Indian English. They are heroes, even they may be losers, but have a peculiar way of holding on to society and prove they are needed in a tough world.
When Mei leaves his village for the city, is a bit like a child leaves the womb. The outside world is strange, does not matter whether China or the West. I think it is important to show how the story ends for Mei, but it seemed crucial to show how it goes. The film concerns the protagonist's inner journey, the risks you are willing to take, his discovery and the price they must pay for their adventures. Speaks of an immature person who begins to see himself same, to have desires, and ultimately must face their challenges, their responsibilities and must make decisions.
The pace of the film is fast, the story is divided into chapters short and compact. The soundtrack is based on themes of punk rock, very energetic. The open end of the film when we see Mei near the sea, represents the unknown future of the new China, daring, mysterious and provocative.
As a filmmaker born in a village in rural China, who went to Beijing to study and completed his studies in the West, I think any trip is a journey of the mind, which hits the target and incidental decisions that take the course of life, creating an unexpected present and a future puzzle. It makes us feel alive and can move forward into the future.
